Overcoming great technological challenges to video production through innovation, Spring 2010

Designing a prototype

The Manu Biosphere Project will be documented in HD and SD video this year with interviews collected in Peru from cities and from deep within the Amazon Rainforest. Conducting this operation far from roads or civilization will require specialized equipment. Currently there is nothing on the market compact or durable enough to meet all the requirements.

The Edison Exploratorium will use existing products to redesign special lighting systems that will operate in the hostile natural conditions.

"I have experience shooting in 14 different countries in difficult climatic environments, but this will be the biggest challenge so far." - Mike Whelan, videographer for the project.

Here are some of the challenges that face the production in Peru:

-High humidity and adverse climate threaten to disable or destroy video equipment
-No electric power for long periods of time will make it difficult to operate using standard equipment
-Remote camp locations - days from the nearest air strip or road will make it vital to keep everything as light as possible. Equipment will have to be kept in 100% watertight storage during hazardous river travel.
-Leave nothing behind: toxic disposable power sources like car batteries will not be an option.
-Some video will have to be collected carefully since it will gather evidence of illegal mining operations, and the uncontrolled pollution of connected river systems with mercury and cyanide.

Special solar panel arrays, custom waterproof lighting, and other prototype devices will be used to make video possible from this corner of the earth.

The weight and size savings due to new technologies will greatly improve the ability to shoot video in remote areas.
